Kinetic Art - The Movement That Brought Motion to Modern Sculpture

The history of kinetic art is a long one, not being established as a major art movement until the 1950s. Kinetic art has existed since the 20th century, but it did not become a modern art movement until a few artists, including Naum Gabo and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, began using electric machines in their sculptures. However, starting in the 1950s and 1960s, in Europe, kinetic art " went out of fashion" as the world entered the digital age and artists began to experiment with video, computers, film, and lasers.

Interest in kinetic art dates back to 1913 during the Dada and Constructivist art movements . Artists such as Jean Tinguely , a Swiss painter and sculptor, were fascinated by the possibilities of movement in art and its potential to create interactive relationships and visual experiences that went beyond the boundaries of traditional, static objects. Tinguely created sculptures that would have a more active presence both in the gallery and outside.

Kinetic art or kinetic art is a type of modern art that is based on capturing elements in motion or elements that depend on this physical process. The elements that are in motion can be driven by the power of the wind, a motorized system or even by the person who comes into contact with the kinetic artwork. In many situations, the emphasis is on optical illusion, giving the feeling that a certain system is in motion without it actually being in motion. This type of art is called " op-art ", or optical art .

Kineticism combines various techniques and styles that make this modern form of artistic expression extremely interesting, being in fact a harmonious combination of art and science.

Kinetic Rain is a sculpture by German company ART+COM, located in Terminal 1 of Changi Airport in Singapore . The sculpture consists of two sets, each made of 608 copper-coated aluminum alloy “ raindrops ”, suspended from the ceiling of the Terminal. The choreography of the two sets is independently controlled by a computer and lasts 15 minutes.
